United Nations and National SDG Working Group Discuss Further Implementation of Agenda 2030

Ashgabat, March 30, 2018: The National Working Group on the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Turkmenistan and United Nations held a meeting to discuss results and recommendations of the MAPS (Mainstreaming, acceleration and policy support) mission as well as further steps of SDG implementation and possible support of the UN to the Government of Turkmenistan.

The high-level meeting was co-chaired by the Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan and UN Resident Coordinator and attended by over 60 members of the working group including deputy ministers and heads of the national agencies. The progress in the implementation of SDGs in Turkmenistan through national programmes were presented by Batyr Bazarov, the Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan.

“A crucial moment in the realizations of recommendations within the priority areas is the strengthening of coordination within SDG Working group, including support for UN agencies in implementing Agenda 2030 in the country” has stressed Elena Panova, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan.

Heads of the UN agencies delivered a presentation on the recommendations of the MAPS mission on acceleration points for the sustainable development agenda in Turkmenistan where UNDP will serve as SDG integrator providing platform for all to participate in the process. Participants of the working group have considered the status quo and provided suggestions on how to take the recommendations forward. It was agreed that members of the working group will provide their feedback detailing the acceleration plan for SDG implementation on individual agency basis.

The participants were also introduced to the work of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on sustainable development  which is annually held under the auspices of the ECOSOC in the Unites Nations headquarters in New York. Turkmenistan has expressed intention to participate at this international platform to demonstrate its achievements and share experience on the implementation of SDGs on the national and regional level.

The guest speaker, Professor Alan Miller, the Special Envoy of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions has presented a Human Rights Based Approach to the SDGs and particularly Goal 16 which is one of the main agenda item for HLPF in 2019. The representatives of the United Nations confirmed readiness to support Turkmenistan in conducting the national review and preparing a report for the High-Level Political Forum.

In 2017, Turkmenistan was one of the first five countries in Europe and CIS to host the MAPS mission which was aimed to provide practical solutions to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2030 in the country.
