Focus area 4: Supporting the participation of civil society in development

The United Nations recognizes the special role that civil society and public organizations play in the development of the country such as performing a variety of services and humanitarian functions amongst others.

They bring citizens’ concerns to governments, monitor policy and programme implementation, provide analysis and expertise, serve as early warning mechanisms, and help monitor and implement international agreements.

The UN Country Team (UNCT) supports Turkmenistan’s efforts in addressing the human development challenges, as well as numerous reforms aimed at social security, healthcare and education, and economic development.

Within this context, the UNCT advocates and facilitates for strong partnership between civil society and the government to deliver the services and monitor the realization of the reforms on the grassroots level.

The UNCT will be encouraging and supporting civil society sector in the implementation of the post-2015 development agenda.

Therefore, supporting the Government in creating an enabling environment for civil society to operate will be the core focus of the UNCT activities in 2016.
